I've been working from home a lot lately. The startup I'm currently working with is mostly in Europe so my hours are extremely flexible and most of my human interaction takes place over skype or IRC. It actually works out quite well as I get lots of work done, but can be ready to give Kerry breaks throughout the day.

Last week while Mom had a much-deserved night out Joshua and I hit our favorite scene. Joshua's absolute most favorite food is the mac&cheese at Arbor Brewing (http://www.arborbrewing.com/). He will literally eat his body weight in it. If you follow our flickr feed (http://www.flickr.com/jonandkerry) you've probably seen a lot of pictures of us there.

After a manly meal at the bar we headed over to REI to play in the tents and look at all the manly camping equipment. Then ended the night at the Whole Foods next door for some desert (manly desert of course).

Its been a long time since our last post. To be honest, social networks like twitter, flickr, and facebook have pretty much taken over our external communication. They allow us to stay way more up to date with less buy-in. I can post a tweet in a few seconds and facebook pretty much runs itself. That being said I think its import to try and maintain some sort of presence on this blog. So here is an update:

1) Yes, we are having a second baby! We found out a few weeks ago that it will be a girl and she is due in September. Haven't completely settled on names yet, as we are still coming to terms with the fact that we are actually going to do this again. Coming from a family of all boys, I should be even more useless than I was the first time around ;)

2) We just got back from our first non-Dallas vacation with Joshua. If you were following my twitter feeds you probably saw a few negative posts. We had a great time but there were definitely some challenges we hadn't anticipated including a surprise visit from the stomach flu fairy, me backing the van into the house a few hours before we needed to drive it 8 hours, and shaving around 3 hours off of Joshua's sleep schedule every day until he completely broke down. Aside from that it was great seeing Kerry's sister and Nashville and every second with Joshua was well worth it.

3) I'm still at Zattoo working hard to bring TV in languages I still can't understand to greater Europe. I love working at Zattoo, as after working at so many different types of companies I've decided I'm a startup/small company man. Even with all the turbulence in the economy right now, Zattoo is a perfect fit for me right now as it allows me to help build a small company while maintain some presence of financial stability to my family.

4) Joshua is surprising us at every turn. He can now count to 100 and can write numbers from 1-10. He can also spell most of our names using letter magnets, which I sometimes still can't do.

So thats about it from my end. Things are going well up here in the Arctic. As I said above if you want to keep a closer eye on us check us out on our respective social hangouts. And of course if you every happen to be in Ann Arbor you can always drop by ;)

This is joshua making the next big thing at Zattoo. Believe it or not he actually got some unix commands correct (ls, df). Of course he also typed the entire alphabet, which the terminal didn't like too much. What took me a 4 year degree and 10 years experience my 2 year old was doing after 2 cookies. He got my hair but mom's smarts :)

Being a geek and technology professional in the Ann Arbor area, it benefits me in multiple ways to have lots of people like me in the area. In an effort to try and create a society for geeks and people who want to employ geeks in this area a bunch of us have started A2Geeks.org. Please go check it out. If you are part of a professional group please register it and if you want to help we absolutely welcome it! We are currently planning 2 events I'm pretty excited about, both of which should be free. For both of them we are looking for speakers, organizers, sponsors, you name it.

The first is the annual ArbCamp 2008 on December 18.

ArbCamp is a spin off the famous "Bar Camp" idea, which is an "unconference". Its less about formal speakers and sessions and more about getting people interested in talking about various topics together. The second is the first ever A2geek spring conference hopefully sometime in March of 2009.

Halloween was great. Joshua got all dressed up and even let us put face paint on him. One of the many things we absolutely love about our neighborhood is the family involvement. All the families were outside and one of our neighbors even had a party, which was a lot of fun. Here is Joshua with two of his best friends, Katie and Alex (they are goth and rocker girls).

What can I say, I'm disappointed. I live next to the city with the worst NFL football team in the U.S. And its not just a bad year, the Lions have never been good. I simply can't root for them. One part of my Texanship (and yes, I'm a Texan, and so is Joshua) that I flaunt aggressively is that I'm a Cowboy's fan. The big star, the new stadium, its everything I love about my home state. I really hope they can pull it together because I'm planning the mother of all superbowl parties if they do.

Oh.. and Owens, there is no "I" in team. There is also no "jerk" and "drama queen", incase you were wondering. Grow up and get open or shut up and block someone.

Wow, its been a while. So many things have been going on and we've been having a great time. My mom came up to visit last Saturday and spent the week catching up with Joshua, spoiling us with amazing cooking, and we've loved it. Unfortunately today she is off to Chicago to visit Chris in Chicago.

Sunday we all went to an Apple orchard and had a great time. Last year we did the same thing but waited too late in the year to go. This hear we hit it perfect, lots of apples, beautiful weather, and beautiful company. Here is a flickr set of our visit

Joshau is doing fantastic. We had to switch day cares a few weeks ago and once again we got really lucky. The new place is a really cool place that he can grow with and his old teacher is there also, which makes the transition easier. The first few days off drop offs was a little difficult but now he is basically running out of my arms to get started with the day. Oh, and his new trick is singing, a lot..

I've still been plugging away at Zattoo and loving every second of it. The market obviously has me a little worried but, due to luck and not any planning on my part, I haven't done too bad.

Because Kerry and I are good and proper U.S. citizens, did we decide to spend our economic stimulus check on saving or paying off debt? HECK NO! We went out and bought a freakin big play set for Joshua!

This was really suppose to be his birthday present, but because of the delivery delay we just got it. I have to admit its awesome. The thing has 3 swings, a rock wall, rope ladder, step ladder, a 8-foot wavy slide, and a club house. Joshua loves it and so do the rest of the kids on the block. I have a feeling the wine circle will start residing in our backyard from now on.

The few people in my personal life who have insight into what I do at work know I've been working night & day the past few months to get Zattoo ready for Euro 2008.

Zattoo (the TPTV startup I work for) mostly streams live television in Europe right now. This weekend the Euro 2008 soccer tournament started. This cup features all qualifying European soccer clubs, battling it out, twice a day, for 3 weeks. The viewership is huge and completely trumps anything the U.S. has seen (including the superbowl).

Here is Daddy and Son, hard at work at the opening of Euro2008 bringing soccer to all the fans in Europe. Enjoy.

Today is Joshua's 2nd birthday. Waking up this morning I couldn't believe its been 2 years since Kerry and I were at the hospital meeting him for the first time. What seemed like a pretty scary start has turned into a wonderful two years.

Before we had Joshua more people that I can count gave us this piece of advice:

"Having kids will be the most challenging and rewarding thing you will ever do."

Looking back at the last 2 years I'd have to agree, parenting is the most challenging thing I've ever taken on. That being said when looking at the picture above, it is definitely the most rewarding thing I'm pretty sure I will ever do. We've loved every second of the last 2 years and we can't wait to see what next year has in store.

We use Flickr (www.flickr.com) for all of our photo sharing, and if you haven't seen the 2,000+ photos we've uploaded, we use it a lot.

Now flickr allows uploading video files. To test it out here is Joshua taking his first steps, obviously a while back. I'm really impressed with Flickr's video support and it adds a lot of value to an already affordable service.

Last weekend my Dad was in Chicago for business so we loaded the minivan and headed to see him for a night. Obviously Joshua had a great time at the Disney and Lego store on Michigan Ave. But I would have to say he obviously had the most fun in the Hotel pool. He really took to it well, even having his head below water. Maybe we have a future Michael Phelps on our hands?

On Friday I took the day off for another rendition of "Man Day." It was another fantastic day where Joshua and I started off with pancakes, then cruised the mall for a few hours, then went to one of our favorite restaurants for lunch.

This picture was taken at the Ann Arbor Apple store. As you can see Joshua felt right at home playing with the "Dr Seus" game. Of course, being my son, he prefers Macs.

This will be a fast post because I can barely stay awake, but I feel I should update on the million things that have happened the last 2 weeks.

Man... the last few weeks have been a tornado. Two weekends ago we went to South Bend to attend Amanda's (Kerry's college roommate) wedding reception. It as a wonderful time, great dinner, and great weekend. Joshua enjoyed playing with the other kids and really enjoyed running around the College Football Hall of Fame. They had a full width, half length football field that he out-ran us all on it.

When we got back on Sunday I quickly had to repack and fly out for Zurich, Switzerland for work. It was a very productive trip, with lots of meetings and long hours. The 12 hour travel there and back was a little long but worth both the work achievements and just to see Switzerland. I won't go into all the differences between the U.S. and Europe except to say there are a lot of differences, many of which favor Europe. But after a week I was happy to get back on the plan and jet back to my family. I'm still amazed how much energy that trip took out of me when I got back, its been 5 days and I'm still recovering.

While waiting for our return flight back to Michigan at DFW Joshua and I went into a Dallas Cowboy's store. Joshua quickly reached out of the stroller and put on a pretty cool looking Cowboys hat on. Since I was pretty bummed about leaving Texas and was overcome with pride that my son was obviously choosing the Cowboy's over the Loins I bought the hat. This is now the most expensive hat I own.

I just found out that my brother is moving to Chicago, which is about 6 hours from us! While its a little sad that more of my family is moving out of our home state I can't help but be super excited that I'll have him close. Its been almost 6 years since we have lived close together and I'm looking forward to catching up on lost time!

Of course he will be super busy with his exciting new job at Blue Magnet Interactive but I'm sure he can drop by AA every once and a while.

I love football, both college and pro. In fact, for someone who has never played a second of competitive football in his life its weird how much I like it.

I'm really excited about tonight's superbowl. The last time these two teams met was a great game, which I missed because I was holding my son's head over a toilet while he was puking (ahh, the holidays).

My Predictions:

I obviously think the patriots will win and thus wrap up a perfect season. That being said I think its going to be a very close and hard-fought game. So crack a few beers and lets watch some football!

The past few years I've noticed that more and more of Kerry and I's friends are being remotely located. Obviously we have lots of friends in Texas but also many of our friends in Michigan have moved elsewhere, which makes keeping in contact difficult. I've tried to jump on the social space train and get into Facebook. The problem is when I do find myself at a computer its usually for work, and I get very little social time (just look how sparse this and my tech blog is).

Recently I discovered that Facebook has an iPhone interface. Its basically a web interface optimized for use with the iPhone, and I love it. Now when I have a few seconds free I can bring up facebook on my iPhone and write on walls and update my status.

If you have an iPhone and want to give it a try just go to facebook.com in the browser, you will automatically be forwarded to the iPhone interface. If you want a neat icon on your iPhone desktop just press the "+" button and select "add to desktop. Now facebook is 1 click away.

Has anyone had any experience with it on other smart devices (blackberry, Palm)?

I make my own pizza, including my own dough. For those who don't know pizza dough is incredibly simple and the resulting pizzas are so much tastier and healthier than delivery (and I'm sure cleaner). On top of that Joshua loves them. His favorite seems to be cheese with hamburger and tomato slices (no sauce, just olive oil). We usually do this at least once a week.

So Sunday I decided to get Joshua involved. He started by watching me add the blossomed yeast to the dry ingredients and then helped me knead it into a dough. After resting he helped me roll out the dough and add the toppings. He seemed to love every second and It was a perfect example of getting your kids involved in the kitchen. Of course the only problem was keeping him from eating the cheese off the uncooked pizza while we were assembling it.

I'll have to think of other dishes he can help with, obviously pizza worked well because none of the ingredients were hot.

Its been a while since my last post and for good reason, a lot has happened. Christmas was a blast, and Santa really must have thought Joshua was good this year because he made several trips. We started the season at Kerry's parents with a great Christmas. Joshua's big gift was the cadillac of wagons.

Shortly after that we flew to Dallas to be with my family and had a great time. The grandparents and great grandparents got to royally spoil Joshua and I got to see my brother and his girlfriend and some of our Baylor friends at new years. The only downside is once we got there Joshua got a nasty stomach bug. While the throwing-up only lasted a few hours he was recovering for most of the trip. Even so he was ready to entertain the whole time.

Upon returning to Michigan (and leaving beautiful Texas weather for nasty, wet, cold Michigan weather) Kerry and I both got to experience the stomach bug for ourselves. Not a flick you want to catch. Still, it was a great holidays.

This weekend we all went to an apple orchard & pumpkin patch. At first Joshua was a little uneasy with all the "nature" around him but later he was picking more apples than we could carry. Great weather, great company, and a great time.

Man Day

So yesterday was the last day I was required by health services to stay away from the office. I decided to keep Joshua home from daycare and have a father/son man day. It was fantastic!

We started the day the way all men should, with coffee and donuts. Then we hung out at the Ann Arbor mall for several hours. Briarwood mall is a great place for Joshua with its nice playground, fountains, and wide halls for him to run around in. We read books at Borders, played kids games at the Apple store and even listened to the piano player at Van Maur. We then went to lunch at Macs, his favorite restaurant where he ate his weight in tomato pasta and French fries.

Even though with all the excitement we missed his nap time he was in a good mood all day. I think I'm going to make "Man Day" a more regular event.

Don't touch the monkey

One year, I don't remember which one, the outbreak movies were all the rage. Several shows came about describing some virus that starting in a monkey or rat and threatened to spread to the human population. Usually in these movies there was an unfortunate human who had caught the virus. This character usually appeared in a glass bubble being poked and prodded by doctors.

Well, today I'm that human. Late last week I started feeling ill, and just thought I was catching Joshua's first cold of winter. I later find out that I have the mumps virus! I'm one of the lucky 10% who can both be immune an also catch the virus (which sort of changes the definition of immune but I write code, not cure viruses).

Luckily Joshua is fine, the doctors are very sure that he is not at risk and with his teeth finally breaking through he is in the best mood in weeks. I, on the other hand have been ordered to say in my house until next week for fear of outbreak. I mean this seamed like a big deal. My boss at work got a call from the Human Health Services and had to pass out informative information and everything. So I'm the guy in the bubble for the next few days that everyone wonders if they got too close to.

I'm not complaining though. I've got a pretty good setup at home and I loving working here (quite and comfortable). While I'd love to just take the next few days off from work and have some father-son time I know cold season is around the corner and Joshua will need those sick days then. So he has been cleared for daycare, which he loves to go to anyways (he is very much the social butterfly).

Kerry just posted the 15 month pictures of Joshua. Its been a few months since we did this and you can really see the differences. In my eyes one big difference is you can really start to see his personality come out. In previous pictures he obviously smiled more but that was simply because there were lots of people in the room. Now he is more engaging. He was studying the people in the room and more interested in communicating with them rather than just smiling and laughing at what they were doing. Don't get me wrong, he was still the very social butterfly but now he wants to do stuff with you and learn about you rather than just laugh at you because of a funny face.

Oh, and of course the other major change is the mountain of white hair on his head. We try to comb it, and that lasts for about 5 minutes until he starts pulling at it or rubs some sort of food into it. Who knew tomato sauce could add such body to your hair?

This photo was taken at our block Labor Day party. My neighbor David, and accomplished grill master, treated us with his special ribs and homemade BBQ sauce. As you can tell these ribs are Joshua approved. What is more impressive is what his shirt looked like after the party.

iPhone Buzz

Last week I finally got the chance to play with an iPhone. As I blogged about earlier, my razor V3 was destroyed in the wilderness so I stopped by my local Cingular store to see if there was anything they could do. Incidentally there wasn't but while I was there I played with one of the iPhones they had on display.

The iPhone has gotten mixed reviews. Most professional reviewers loved it but the tech forums have gone both ways. I usually don't give too much notice to tech forums in these things because it seems to be human nature that if non-journalists are going to go through the trouble of posting a comment on a technology forum, its usually because they want to say something negative.

Anyways, I played with the iPhone for several minutes and my professional opinion as a technology professional is that it is unlike any hand-held device I have ever used! The ease-of-use both in the hardware and the software is truly a innovation in human interaction. Any software engineer who has had to create a user interface for customers know how difficult it is to make things "user friendly" for the average software users. Traditionally hand-held devices have not done a good job of this but gotten away with the fact that they are "hand-held" .

The way I usually measure the usability of a new hand-held device is by trying to do something and seeing how long it takes me to figure out. That includes trying to decide which buttons to press, menus to go through and how to enter data. The more "trials and errors" I have to go through to figure out a task, the less usable a devices is to me.

The designers of the iPhone really took this into consideration. When looking at the main menu you see a list of familiar icons (iPhoto, phone, ipod, maps, etc). Pressing on any of them takes you within one or 2 clicks of what you want to do. The integration of gestures on the touch screen, while may take some getting use to, can increase functionality much like the famous "click wheel" did on the blackberry.

One of the big points of controversy is the qwerty keyboard that is displayed when you want to enter textual information. While at first it looks very unusable (buttons are very small), the smarts behind it seem to work well with how human figures would use it and I was able to type very proficiently in no time at all.

So from a technology perspective its awesome. Now lets get down to price, $499-$599, and yes that is a huge sum of money for a device which will most likely keep me from getting one. Not because I don't think its worth it but because I have a 14-month kid and we need to spend that money on other things. Do I think it is worth the money, absolutely! This is a revolutionary device and people should not expect it to be dispensed from candy machines.

This last week we have been vacationing at my parent's house in Santa Fe, NM. If you have never been Santa Fe is an amazing place with beautiful scenery, climate and culture. Joshua enjoyed being royally spoiled by his grandparents and Kerry and I enjoyed everything from hiking in the rain (that was me and my dad, not Kerry), eating some amazing food and enjoying the beautiful view of the mountains.

The one downside is my phone (Razor V3) got wet while hiking and no longer works. I've reverted back to my previous phone, which feels like a brick compared to my Razor. If you called me on my cell and I haven't called you back you may want to retry.

Traditionally I've done most of my online chatting on the AOL AIM network. I literally have the same screen name I've had since high school. Working at Zattoo where we are very geographically separated I've gotten use to Skype. Skype (recently bought by eBay) is a p2p client that offers chatting, phone, and video conferencing. I have to admit, if more of my friends would switch so would I.

The phone service works great and we use it regurally for conference calls across the world. The video conferencing is actually better and more reliable than iChat (although will still use all the goodies your mac provides) and the chatting software is very up to par. And since its p2p it makes good use of any bandwidth it can find.

So try Skype, and if you do IM me or give me a ring. My screen name is jonathanduty (home) and jonathan_zattoo (work).

For those who remember Joshua was not only born under weight but really didn't like to eat. Well, those times are gone. We have ourselves an eating machine. Even though it is sometimes difficult to keep the food coming in fast enough Kerry and I secretly love it. There is nothing better than seeing your once very underweight son plow through a whole stack of pancakes and smile while doing it.

I should also note that he is completely off the bottle and formula. We now start every morning with a sippy-cup of milk and slice of cinnamon-swirl bread (thanks to Pop and Grammy for that discovery). The nightly bottle is completely gone and is replaced by a cup of yogurt.

Today Kerry and I have been married 5 years. It has been a great and wild ride including a nation-wide relocation, buying, selling, and buying a house, a few hospital visits, our first baby, a few vacations, and about 10 different jobs between us. I can't speak for her but when I first met that girl in the elevator of Collins Dorm at Baylor I had no idea almost a decade later she would be the mother of my child. Its wonderful being married to her and I can't wait to see what the next 5 years will bring us.

Recently CNN ran a story about an 11-year old boy who killed what was believed to be the largest wild pig ever. The animal weighed more than 1000 lbs and was more than 9 long. They have now uncovered that this pig was not wild but was raised on a farm in Alabama and recently sold to a couple who owned the property that it was killed on.

What really amazes me about this story isn't the pig but the story on how it was bought and sold. It was actually a Christmas gift from a husband to his wife.

Kerry and I have our 5-year anniversary coming up. I keep trying to imagine the scenario of me buying her a 1000 lb pig to show my love for her. Its hard to imagine the outcome but I'm pretty sure it would eliminate the need to purchase a 6-year anniversary present ;)

We have just finalized our summer Dallas trip. The gang and I will be in Dallas, TX from Jun 22 to July 2. We decided to have Joshua's Birthday party on Saturday when family and friends could make it. The party has huge, both family from out of town and many friends from the neighborhood came. As much as Joshua loves people this day was a marathon for him going for several hours with lots of people and noise around him. That being said he did wonderful smiling all the time and playing with the kids. And everyone really seemed to enjoy him also.

Afterwards Kerry and I have decided we need to sell some of our furniture to make room for all his toys.

Last Friday was Joshua's Birthday and to celebrate my parents took all of us out to dinner. I have to say it was literally one of the best nights of my life. Joshua was completely animated the entire time and really was the star of the restaurant. He was having so much fun flirting that people were actually coming over from other tables to see him. This week

This week is looking to be a fun and very busy week. First off, and most important, our little Bug turns 1 on Friday! We will be throwing him a party on Saturday with lots of family, friends and cake. We have even ordered him a special "smash cake" that he can, well smash.

My parents are coming in Wednesday to ensure that Joshua is rightly spoiled for the following days. Both Kerry and I are really looking forward to this and I know they are also. My dad is severely allergic to cats so the Hershey and Patches have been exiled to the basement for the week and we have been madly sterilizing house. Its something we've needed to do anyways so this is a good excuse. Obviously it will be impossible to get all of the dander, but hopefully we can increase the amount of time my Dad can be inside. We have also been contemplating getting a HEPA filter. Odds are if they weather stays the same we will be spending most of our time outside anyways.

I'll post more later as plans materialize.

Since last week when Joshua took his first steps he really hasn't done much walking. We can't blame him since he has had a double ear infection which can throw your balance out of wack. Of course when he does decide to move it is 100 miles an hour and usually involves high pitched noises and flailing arms. This picture is usually the last thing you see before the monster gets you.

Things have been great around the Duty household. Joshua is literally on the verge of walking. He can stand up on his own but still hasn't taken that first step. This picture was taken from our phone at a store in downtown Ann Arbor. Every week we take Joshua to Music Together. Its sort of a music class for babies and toddlers. Joshua loves it and whenever he sees something that resembles an instrument in that class you can't keep him away. When we were shopping we came across this African drum and he knew exactly what to do.

Things at work have been awesome. Working at a startup is very fast-paced but I love being on the edge of technology and the small company atmosphere is wonderful. While most of you in the U.S. don't know what Zattoo is in Europe it is erupting has an awesome technology.

Other than that we are finally seeing warmer temperatures in Michigan. Right now its 70 degrees and sunny.

Last week was Kerry and her Mom's spring break so they took Joshua to see her grandparents (his great grand parents) in Florida. After a rough start that included getting sick, a trip to the hospital, and rescheduling departing flights for a day they finally got there.

From the looks of the pictures Joshua had a great time and so did his great grand parents. We learned a few things:

1) Joshua loves swimming pools (while in flotation devices of course).
2) Joshua hates sand
3) Its warmer in Florida that it is in Michigan.

I had to stay back and work so I was thinking about them on that beach while I was driving through the snow.

Last week there were about 2 days where it was just beautiful. 70's and not a cloud in the sky. Being an avid runner I shoe-up for a good run. Luckily this year I get to have a buddy help me out. Kerry got me this running stroller for my birthday last year and this is really the first time we've gotten to use it (December in Michigan is not great for running with an infant).

Joshua did great, staying awake for half the run and laid back and taking a nap for the other half. I love running and I love sharing that with him, as long as I survive pushing the stroller for a good 45 min. Hopefully as we continue to move towards spring this can become a daily thing.

Well guys, I've decided to go off the deep end. I will be leaving my job at PTC to join a really cool internet startup called Zattoo to do some ground breaking work in the world of internet TV. I'm really excited and a little nervous but I think its the right move at the right time and I feel I can contribute a lot to their overall goals. Plus, its just a cool place and how awesome does P2P TV anywhere sound!! If you haven't heard of them, don't worry, they are mostly in Europe right now but just wait. This is promising to be a wild and at times crazy ride but I'm ready for it.

One thing a little bouncing boy brings in lots of laundry, along with what Kerry and I already produce we were really giving our current machines a workout. Kerry does most of the laundry and was averaging close to 10 loads a weekend (our current machines are very small). So, with gas and utility prices on the rise we decided to invest in some shiny new energy efficient appliances. We went with both front-loading LG brands and we can't wait to get them installed. Hopefully this will not only decrease the amount of energy we use but decrease the loads and time spent doing laundry. And if all else they look really cool.

We got them at Best Buy and Joshua really picked them out liking the shiny metal around the doors.

[UPDATE] - Kerry wanted me to correct some facts in the above post, she does all the laundry. Every since I put a red pen in with my laundry in college I've been banned.

Man Pretty

Kerry got me a really great gift for valentine's day. I got the Burts Bee's Ray Rum shaving kit. This kit comes with one of those lather brushes and shaving soaps that you see on old-style movies. After using it a few times I have to say I have no idea why this stuff went out of style. It is so much better than shaving cream. You basically put the soap bar in a mug, wet your brush and swirl it around the mug until the foam forms. Then use your brush to lather that stuff on, all the while ex foliating your face (not sure what that is but Kerry says its a good thing).

I get closer shaves with no burn and my skin feels better. It takes a little getting use to and I'm not totally sure I'm using it correctly yet, but I recommend it to any shavers out there.

This last weekend was good. Our day-car provider had Friday and Monday off so Joshua got to spend some quality time with his grandma (Thanks Again Grandma). We really wanted to take him outside but figured a 3 degree wind chill was no good for a baby. This next weekend its suppose to be in the 40s so hopefully we can break out the turbo-sled before all the snow melts.

Joshua has pretty much out grown his current pair of Robeez so we were looking for a new pair. For those who don't know, I think Robeez are the best shoes for infants because they fit well and they can't pull them off. I went looking on their website for a new stylish pair and just for fun (and partially to tick off Kerry) I typed in "Texas" as the search criteria. Low and behold they make a Lone-Star style Robeez! I couldn't take my credit card out fast enough. This summer Joshua is going to be flaunting his Texas bloodline.

iChat rocks

There are some things you come across that are life-changing things. Things that you use on a day-to-day basis that really impact how you live your life. I think this is why blackberries are so popular. For me, its Apple's iChat. Me, my parents, and my brother all have macs and very rarely a day goes by that we don't iChat (well, usually Joshua iChats). If you have a family that is geographically separated its a great investment.

What I'm amazed with is how Apple got amazing quality and made the whole video conferencing idea completely push-button. And no, you don't get the same quality from other vendors, I've tried. I'm still waiting for someone to show me a PC that can do this.

Today I was eating lunch at Whole Foods in Ann Arbor, MI while playing on my MacBook. Luckily Whole Foods offers free WiFi (thank you). So right there in the middle of Whole Foods I startup an iChat session with my Dad in Santa Fe, NM and its crystal clear! Bravo to the Apple iChat team!

Of course what is even more amazing is that less than 10 years ago I would have been lucky to get a cell phone connection there, and if I did the device I would have been using would have been larger than my briefcase.

Freakin Cold & thoughts of Fast Food

This morning when I left for work it was -9 degrees. Luckily Kerry had a delay so we didn't have to get Joshua out in that. It was around that cold all weekend and not knowing what that would do to Joshua we pretty much kept him inside all weekend.

While Joshua got his fill of chasing cats around the house and iChating with family I started reading "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser. This book seems to be taking a systematic look at the rise of fast food and how it has affected so many parts of our lives. Some of the numbers are amazing, including the fact that 1 out of every 8 working adults in America at one point in time was employed by McDonalds. That seems like a huge number to me but it shows how big these companies are. Anyways, I'll post more once I'm done.

Norah Jones CD

I just picked up the new Norah Jones album Not Too Late on iTunes and I love it. It is a little different than her previous albums as she seems to be experimenting with different styles (folk, blue grass, jazz) but it comes out very well. I really recommend you check it out.

On the album she sings a song called Sinkin' Soon twice (#2 and #14) and I'm trying to figure out what she is singing about. With all the stuff going on today it could be directed at a bunch of things.

It seems like we have entered a race, For the last week or so everyday has been something new. Now Joshua is pulling himself to his feet every chance he gets. He is also eating a lot more so we are pretty sure he is staring his next growth spurt. Just watching him interact with toys, objects and other people you can see he is just a sponge right now.

After he was born everyone told me don't blink because you will miss something and before you know it they will be grown up. I'm beginning to think thats true.

Quick note, as you can tell from the bump on his head, he had a few unsuccessful tries before he got it right.

Running hard but going nowhere

Last night Kerry and I purchased a NordicTrack Elliptical 800 from Sears. I'm a pretty regular runner, but with the ice and snow its a little scary (I'm not quite ready for a broken hip) and Kerry has been looking to do some cardio. With Joshua its a little hard for either of us to get to a gym regularly so we thought this was the best option. We were never expecting to get a Nordic Track but got lucky finding a closed-out returned one at the store which was marked down heavily. After looking at the sledding pictures, I'm not convinced he was actually with us. We may have accidentally left him inside and just taken a pile of winter clothes with us. Can you find the baby in this picture (helps if you cross your eyes)?

Saturday there was a light dusting of snow, so we decided to try out Joshua's new sled. All and all it worked well, and you can almost see him through all the snow gear. This is him breaking 3-Gs in our front yard.

Today Joshua went from a crawling position to sitting up on his own! This is a big deal now because now, without the help of us, he can crawl to something, sit up on his own, and play with it. Our boy is going places!
