Graduation Day

Last night Kerry and I graduated from Lamaze class. It was even made official with a stamped certificate of and everything. I really enjoyed the classes and would recommend it to anyone about to have their first kid. I’m sure the experience completely depends on the instructor, which ours was great. The theme for this weekend will be packing, packing, packing. I’ve got to make some headway or next week will be very busy. We also have our hospital tour on Saturday. Not sure exactly what they going to show us, but I’m guessing we will see what a birthing room looks like. Should be interesting.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome

The last 2 weeks I’ve been back running and loving it. I was averaging about 4 miles per day at a pretty easy pace (didn’t want to push it). Over the weekend I started feeling a pain on the outside of my left knee. After doing some Internet searching it I’m pretty sure I have Iliotibial Band Syndrome. Even though its sort of painful I’m really hoping this is correct because it is not a “structural” injury to the knee, but rather an inflammation of a ligament that runs from your quad around your knee and attaches in the middle of the shin. Runners see this when they rapidly change their workout regimen, or in my case start it all together. So I’m playing it safe icing my knee for 10 minutes every hour, taking IB Profin every 4 hours and not running for a few days. Something all the websites seemed to stress is you really don’t want to run through the pain because it can turn it from a very treatable inflammation to serious knee injury. Considering I just spent 2 years trying to get my knees healthy again I’ll take the advice.

The great exodus

The exodus has started. Today I really hunkered down and started packing for our move in 2 weeks. I can’t believe how much stuff we have, especially since I actually haven’t seen a lot of this stuff since we last moved!

Jay is Engaged!

Something that I completely forgot to blog about is Jay (Pimp-Daddy) Hudec is engaged to Laura. The only information I have was that they were on a vacation in Hawaii and he popped the question. I’m really happy for Jay and Laura and can’t wait to learn more about the whole engagement.

When I first arrived at Baylor Jay was one of the first people to reach out and welcome me into the band and into Kappa Kappa Psi (Band fraternity). After college we lived together through the fall of the telecom market in Dallas (a good part of that time we spent unemployed). It was hard work spending all day by the apartment pool and harassing Dan’s miniature panther.

Congrads again Jay and Laura!

We got our crib

Our Crib

With much thanks to my parents for covering the bill Kerry and I ordered the baby crib this weekend. The one we initially ordered was discontinued so we went with our second choice. We got the Highland Park Crib in the natural color. Personally I like this one better since it’s a little smaller and seems a lot sturdier. The important things we were looking for were a side that drops down so Kerry can reach over the side and that it not be made out of pine (we hear kids like to chew). We are really excited and the nice thing is the store agreed to keep it for a few weeks so when we move we can just pick it up on the moving truck.

Last Friday Kerry and I went to another ultrasound appointment. After doing some measurements Baby Duty looks perfect, right down the 50% on all marks. Since this was a really fast one we only got one picture. This is by far the pest profile we have of his face yet.

We decided to take the Digital Cannon Rebel XT out for a test spin. The detail is amazing, and it should be at 8 megapixels. Each picture avaraged at around 3 MB each!

Open Source Project

I’ve been toying with starting an open source project, to eventually leads to some sort of monetary revenue source. I like the open source business model that companies like Logicblaze (ActiveMQ and SertviceMix) and JBoss have going. When looking at my career, I’ve pretty much spent my entire time creating middleware or content repositories. Both of which have JSRs defined and in use. The middleware market has some pretty big players so I think I’ll stay away from that. But the content repository market really has very few people, especially people who are JUST offering a content repository. The JCP spec is JSR-170 and it is pretty interesting. Anyone want to help

Our New House!

Just realized that I have never blogged about our new house! We have wanted to move to Saline, MI for a while and finally found a house at a great deal that we love. It is in walking distance from our church, the library, schools, sports fields, AND the pediatrician that we will most likely use. We sign the closing papers on April 7th and have a week to move in. Plus, it is on a cul-de-sac with 2 registered nurses, a couple who just had a boy a few weeks ago, and several really nice families who all have young kids. Like most things location is everything. It really sounds like a great place to raise baby Duty.

Weekend Fun

Kerry and I had a great weekend. Friday night we went to Kerry’s parents house and spent the night. Saturday we saw her sister off to college and went to Babies R Us to look around. My parents helped us pick out a crib when we were in Texas a few weeks ago but we just found out that the Simmons company has been bought by Delta Furniture and they will no longer be producing the crib we wanted. So it was back to the drawing board. I’m pretty happy with the one we found on Saturday, the important thing is that it has a drop down side rail so Kerry can get at the baby and its sturdy.

We also went to Kohls so I could get some new running shoes. Just like most sports, there are a bunch of jogging gadgets and accessories that you will never need but running shoes are not one of them. I really believe that running shoes is something you don’t want to skimp on and they can make our break your running experience. I’m not saying they will make you go faster, but they can help prevent injuries. I decided on the Asics GEL-1110. Kohls had a great deal on them and I love how light and breathable they are. I gave them a test run on Saturday and Sunday and they feel great.

Sunday Kerry played in the Church orchestra and did a great job. Especially since she had to sight read everything. Usually she has rehearsal on Thursday nights, but since we now have Lamaze that night she has to skip. Speaking of Lamaze, I’m realty enjoying it. I find it very informative and helpful, especially since I’m totally clueless as to what to expect when everything starts. If anyone is expecting their first I highly recommend it.

Monday morning rolled around and I awoke with Hershey on my chest due to a thunderstorm. When it is dark, rainy, and you have an 18 pound cat on your chest the last thing you want to do is get up and go to work. But I made it in. Hopefully the week will pass with no fires but who knows. However, cheer up! This Friday is St Patrick’s Day! I’m looking forward to enjoying my pint of Guinness (or two).

People of the 50’s

Someone forwarded me this email today titled “40 to 70 yr. old survivors”. Odds are if you are in your mid-late 20s then your parents were born in this era.

Anyone who recently has had or is getting ready to have a baby knows that everyone has an opinion on what toys, beds, devices and parenting practices will make our break your child. And those opinions change more often than they stay the same. As a future parent trying to sort it all out, this email reminds me that generations have survived and done well in much simpler times.

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1930’s 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s

!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while

they carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and

didn’t get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored

lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and

when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we

took

hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special

treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE

actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soda pop with

sugar in it, but we weren’t overweight because……

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were

back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride

down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running

into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo’s, X-boxes, no video games at

all, no

99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell

phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat

rooms……….WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no

lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in

us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with

sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we

did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or

rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who

didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.

They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem

solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO

DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!

CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow

up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives

for our own good.

and while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how

brave their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn’t

it?!

PS -The big type is because your eyes are shot at your age.

Baby Kerry Jo

While I was in the process of scanning ultrasound pictures I came across a few of Kerry’s baby pictures generously loaned to us by her mom (soon to be grandma). So I figured what the heck and uploaded them. As you can tell from this picture, her love for sweets started early.

And yes, for anyone who is curious, I will get in trouble for this.

February 15th we had another ultrasound to check on Baby Duty. This was a quick one and we only got 2 pictures, but the doctor says he is doing great. His size is right down the 50th percentile. My apologies for taking so long to get them online.
